Who is most accurate?

Post by Tom Tighe »

As I read the Gospels and compare slightly different versions of the same event, I wonder which is the most accurate. This is probably because I look for many layers of information or instruction from each word, even when the lesson of the parable or event is readily understandable on the surface.

I rationalize that John and Matthew would be most accurate or precise since they saw the events first hand. Mark and Luke versions are often more full or better stories to help the listener paint the mental picture of what was happening.

In the gospels I read over and over about how the Pharisees were so distracted by the details of man's law, like the washing of hands, that they could not hear Christ's message. I have come to think that I should not compete one Gospel author against another for accuracy, but to look for the lesson God is trying to pound into my dense and easily distracted mind.
